For sculpting, for brightening and for general prettifying, there's nothing more useful or beautiful than blush. But gone are the days of doll-like cheeks or chalky pink powders.
Instead, a new crop of modern blushers in delicious textures – from glow-giving creams to sheer gels – are here to give skin a healthy colour and youthful pep for summer.
Makeup artist Kenneth Soh, who's known for creating a covetable soft-focus glow, recommends buffing on your blush in two layers: one underneath and another over the top of your foundation for a "soft, edgeless finish". Apply with a fluffy brush (we like Sculpted By Aimee Buffer Complexion Brush Duo, £17), and don't place your colour high on the apple of your cheeks but a little lower and further in, to give a sun-kissed, healthy-looking finish.
Don't fear this season's brighter fuschia, scarlet and tangerine hues either. Elegantly formulated, these colours instantly perk up the complexion in a naturally pretty-looking way. Just remember to start with the tiniest amount and build up from there.

Best dewy blush
BeachPlease Luminous Tinted Balm
Tower 28 Beautycultbeauty.co.uk
£18.00
Inspired the warm glow of a Californian sunset, Tower28's blushes instantly perks up the complexion with a gentle hint of colour. It's good-skin-in-pan; the balmy formula imparts just enough sheen to create a healthy radiance. The second skin finish and buildable colour looks good on a wide range of skin types and tones, too.
2
Best gel blush
ModCon Liquid-Gel Blush
With the consistency of melting jelly, this shimmer-free blush leaves cheeks looking plump and well-hydrated while giving a gorgeous wash of colour.
The fluid consistency doesn't settle into fine lines and is easily blended out with fingertips. There are 4 shades within the range, including Glowlita (pictured), a flattering mauvey-pink.
3
Best serum blush
Puff Paint Liquid Blush Serum
Blush in a serum; yes! This goes on like a regular liquid blush, but it wears so comfortably it feels just like your favourite skincare serum.
It takes minimal effort to blend and creates a seamless, blush-from-within effect.
Plus, the lightweight formula contains skin-loving ingredients, such as antioxidant vitamin E, hydrating glycerin and soothing allantoin.
4
Best stick blush
Teint Idole Ultra Wear Blush Stick
Once buffed into skin, the fine shimmers in this blush impart a fresh-looking luminosity, not disco-ball sparkles.
As the pigments are buildable it's difficult to overdo, and is lovely across eyelids as a dewy eyeshadow as well.
To prevent moving your base or foundation around, apply stick blushers by tapping on with fingers or a medium-dense brush, rather than swiping directly onto skin.
5
Best cream blush
Glow Crème Pigment
There is a balmy, almost gloss-like finish to this creamy formula that lends a healthy sheen to the complexion, especially if your skin is prone to dullness and dehydration (it refuses to cling onto dry patches).
The pigmented cream looks best when buffed out with a brush, and wears nicely on lips as a tinted balm too.
6
Best powder blush
Skin Fetish Divine Blush
Pat McGrath Labs
US$35.00
This embossed Pat McGrath Labs blush is smooth as silk and feels just as luxurious on your skin.
There are 2 finishes (demi-matte and satin), both with finely-milled powder pigments for an ethereal veil of colour and multi-dimensional effect.
You'll find vibrant tones of hot coral and bright golden peach (Nude Venus, pictured), alongside muted, dusky roses that work on every skin tone.
7
Best liquid blush
Watercolour Liquid Cheek Colour
This is a makeup artist staple for good reason. The fluid texture gives a dreamy finish, suits all skin types and is easily buildable.
The subtle luminosity brings extra lift to tired complexions too; don't be afraid to experiment by mixing various shades to create a bespoke hue.
8
Best high street blush
Superdewy Liquid Blush, £5
Revolution Beauty
Revolution Beauty is our go-to for affordable, trendy finds such as this cheek tint. The dewy finish creates a covetable glass-skin effect that stays naturally glowy without any glitter. A little goes a long way; simply dab onto your cheeks and sheer out with fingertips.
9
Best luxury blush
Vanish Blush Stick
Hourglass is the epitome of sophisticated makeup; this blush is no exception. It's creamy yet long-wearing, matte but not flat, and each shade in the 6-hue line-up is versatile enough to suit every skin tone. The emollient formula also blurs pores for a smooth finish.
